The Isle of Man has a very long history of motorsport stretching back over 100 years.
The Manx Government can allow Public roads to be closed so that Rallies, Races and Hill Climbs can use the Island’s challenging roads. This has led to a number of very high-quality National and International events becoming part of the Island's culture and calendar.
The Manx Telecom National Rally runs in early May. It starts with a Spectator Stage in Port Erin on a Friday evening with competition continuing until well after dark. A restart on Saturday morning means the high speed driving continues all day with the winner being declared around teatime.
Rally Isle of Man takes place in July and features a wide range of cars from the most modern who will challenge for Honours in the International classes, to the Historic and Classic rally cars, the type so many enthusiasts have admired for years. If you visit Rally Isle of Man you will see an Escort sliding sideways – and you will smile!
The in-car video on this page shows a short part of the Challenge section of the 2010 Rally Isle of Man. Taken from the car shown above driven by Andrew Holmes and you hear the voice of Co-Driver Steve Fox. As you will see despite the narrow road in many places the car is travelling at well in excess of 100 mph!
