Borders Explorer

Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotland’s most beautiful yet lesser-explored regions, and perhaps one of the easiest parts of Scotland to reach. Discover a landscape of captivating contrasts — from an undulating coastline of rocky shores and sandy beaches to vast forests and peaceful green countryside inland.

This tour showcases the rich history, culture and scenery of Scotland’s southern borders.

Highlights include:

Gretna • Devil’s Porridge Museum • Annandale Distillery • Solway Firth • Drumlanrig Castle

Day 1 – Journey to Gretna

Travel to Dumfries and Galloway and settle in at the Gretna Hall Hotel, your base for the next few days.

Day 2 – Wartime History & Whisky

Begin the day with a visit to the fascinating Devil’s Porridge Museum. Discover the remarkable story of HM Factory Gretna, once the largest munitions factory in the world during the First World War, where the explosive cordite – nicknamed “the devil’s porridge” – was produced. The museum also explores the military history of the Solway Coast during the Second World War and beyond.

In the afternoon, enjoy a short journey to the award-winning Annandale Distillery for a guided tour and tasting, learning about the craft behind their renowned Scotch whisky.

Day 3 – Discover the Solway Firth

Meet your local guide for a scenic day exploring the Scottish side of the Solway Firth. Along the way, uncover charming harbours, beautiful gardens and fascinating links to Robert Burns, Scotland’s beloved national poet.

Day 4 – Drumlanrig Castle

Today we visit the magnificent Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate, set amidst the rolling hills and woodland of the Borders. Explore the grand “Pink Palace” and its world-class art collection, wander through acres of beautiful Victorian gardens, and watch local craftspeople at work in the Stableyard Studios.

Enjoy refreshments in the Castle Tearoom or browse for gifts in the Castle shop. On the return journey to the hotel, there may be time to stop in the historic town of Dumfries.

Day 5 – Homeward Journey

After breakfast, begin your journey home, taking with you wonderful memories of Scotland’s beautiful Borders region.
