So, we thought it would be fun to create a select list of 5 of the best springtime inspired one-day walks our Island has to offer. Your chance to discover the great outdoors in sensational surroundings – the sort of occasions that walkers relish! This list contains exceptional hikes that are both captivating and guaranteed to leave you feeling well exercised!!
Itinerary
Tholtans is the Manx word describing the ruins of an old home, a rapidly disappearing presence amongst the Island’s landscape. Tholt-y-will is a magical walk looking back at a bygone Manx era. This absorbing trail includes amazing views of Snaefell (the Island’s highest point) and the North Barrule ridge, whilst overlooking the scenic Sulby Valley. You also get to explore the Manx National Heritage site of Killabregga, as well as the Tholtans of Craig Moor and Sherragh Vane.
A superb selection of short walks within one day exploring 3 of the Island’s National Glens – with their delightful springtime sights and smells! En route, you’ll witness qaterfalls, spring flowers, biodiversity, wildlife, views, Manx heritage and folklore. Our beautiful and peaceful National Glens have it all!
An exciting trio of walks within one day, where you’ll discover deserted caves, shipwrecks and beaches. These are all rarely visited sites hugging the island’s rugged coastline, where dominance of the sea’s physical power is at close quarters. Timed to coincide with the tides, we walk to view a shipwreck off Jurby and head down to visit caves created by the constant pounding of the waves. The day culminates with a lovely walk down to a secluded beach through one of the islands National glens - Dhoon Glen.
This walk takes you up high in the Central Highlands for some stunning views of the whole Island! It’s a fantastic hike to four distinctively different summits. Your guide will talk you through 500 million years of creation and erosion as you make your way across a manageable route that’s a pleasure to walk. An enjoyable way to be out in the wonderful Manx fresh air, soaking up the panoramic vistas.
Awaiting you is a fascinating walk where you can immerse yourself in medieval history and Island heritage. In fact, no visit to the Isle of Man is complete without a guided walk around the stunning southern tip, around the charming coastal towns of Port St Mary and Port Erin. Along the route, you visit sites of Neolithic graves and ancient promontory forts which are features of this spectacular stretch of coastline. A quite brilliant walk and day out!
Grading
All these walks are classed as MODERATE. You’ll need to have a reasonable level of confidence of your fitness to complete the required distances. Any previous walking experience is always desirable but not essential. The walks include occasional steep climbs and varying terrain and some days might be more demanding than others. all weather conditions. Each walks covers manageable routes with reasonable ground conditions. Be prepared for between 4-7 hours walking per day in all weather conditions. Average daily accents are between 300-500m.
